Weekly Rundown: 002 – Spring Has Arrived!

This week has been a warm one here in South Florida. It reached the 80s every single day, and this coming week is looking to be the same. I think winter has officially left and spring has arrived!

Monday  – Beach Run (4 miles, 53:14, 13:33/mi, 73*)
My favorite temp for an easy run is anything in the low 70s, so this was perfect. The 83% humidity wasn’t so great, but it wasn’t terrible either. Right hip is feeling a little tight so I’ll need to spend extra time stretching it this week. I really think sitting for 8 hours a day is worse for my hip than running is!

Tuesday  – Rest
This was a planned rest day from running. I had intended to do an upper body workout before New Girl and The Mindy Project came on, but instead we got tacos. It was a good decision!

Wednesday  – Stretching (tight hip flexor and IT band)
Unplanned rest day but my right hip was feeling SOOOOO tight and my IT band was also a bit tight. I went to Dicks and bought a resistance band and then did this slightly awkward stretch about five times holding for approx. a minute each time.

^ Fast forward to 27 seconds in for the stretch.

This stretch is LIFE CHANGING. The first time I did it I felt really awkward but you can really feel the stretch in your hip flexor, IT band and butt.

I also did some of the “normal” hip flexor stretches.

Thursday  – Stretching again
I was definitely supposed to run this day, but I woke up with my right hip and IT band still a bit tight. Much less than the previous day, but definitely still annoying. I really need to stop sitting so much! I always feel the tightness the most after hours of sitting at work. I should have done a strength training workout but I didn’t because this was turning out to be a very lazy week.

Friday  – Stretching again
I had plans to meet up with a couple of friends after work, so I knew if I was going to run it needed to happen in the morning. I’m not a morning person at all, so of course that didn’t happen. I definitely took this “reset” thing a little too seriously this week.

I saw the dress as black and blue AND white and gold. It depended on what angle I was looking at the picture.

Saturday  – 4 Miles (no data), Stretching
I finally got in a run! I snuck in a short one between the rainstorms. Unfortunately I didn’t upload the data right away (I don’t leave bluetooth turned on my phone all the time), and by the time I went to sync my phone and Garmin at night my Garmin appeared to be broken :(.

I don’t know what happened! It was working fine at the end of my run and when I got home I plugged it into the charger like normal. Between that time and when I looked at it again something went wrong!

I also did a lot of hip stretching again. Adam commented, “you’ve been stretching a lot this week” YUP. Way more than normal, but I think this needs to become the new normal!

Sunday – Approx 6 miles (no data), Stretching
I downloaded Strava last night to use for this run, but then I decided to just wing it. I haven’t run Garmin-less in forever and since this is my last day of a two-week reset period I figured I would just go out and enjoy it. The good news is that my hip and IT band are feeling soooooooooooooooo much better today! I feel almost 100%!

I do hope that Garmin support will get back to me tomorrow with some help about my poor screen.

If you have ever experienced anything like this with your Garmin please let me know what you did! I tried Google’ing it but I couldn’t find anyone who had the exact same problem!

I haven’t stretched with bands like that in a long time – since PT a few years ago. It does feel great, I don’t why I get so lazy at home about it. I think the sitting kills me too, I do have an ottoman under my desk so I can shift my knees around, but it gets to me some days. Hopefully Garmin will replace it for you if you cant find a fix. They usually do have good support service.
    Stay loose next week!

Thanks Karen! I am keeping my fingers crossed about Garmin Support too.

I have a box under my desk that I sometimes use to shift my legs around on, but I think just all the sitting in general is such a killer! I need to make it a point to get up and move around more often during the workday.

Hm I have never seen anything like that with a garmin! Nice job being so diligent about the stretching. That picture is beautiful and I wish that winter would leave Maryland!

    • March 1, 2015 / 3:37 pm

It’s March now! Your winter will be over soon, too (I think)!

My poor Garmin! I hope she’s feeling better again soon! I feel like a good friend is sick, haha.

  3. March 1, 2015 / 11:46 am

Your poor Garmin! I hope that they can help you fix it.

Nice work taking it easy and getting in a lot of stretching this week. I’m sure your body will be thankful once 5k training starts!

  4. March 1, 2015 / 12:25 pm

I am glad your due diligence with stretching has made your hip and IT band feel a lot better! That stretch with the resistance band looks kind of like the couch stretch I do only it’s on your side whereas the couch stretch, you are upright and get resistance from the wall. I am going to try the resistance band one and compare the two!

    • March 1, 2015 / 3:38 pm

Yes! It reminds me of couch stretch too, and feels a lot like it, except I feel the stretch in my IT band A LOT more!

I love that you decided to get tacos instead of your workout. That sounds like the perfect decision!

I went through a spurt where I stopped using my garmin because I wasn’t really training for anything and the distances/time didn’t matter too much for me. It was honestly kind of freeing to nit have it on… but I hope Garmin does get back to you soon!

    • March 1, 2015 / 3:39 pm

It did feel really freeing and different to not wear the Garmin and just go with the flow. I think I took less walking breaks than I normally do, but I also think I probably ran slower than I normally do, haha.

I seriously hope cool weather makes one more appearance for my half March 15…I’ve been enjoying our winter but it’s been steamy here, too.

I hope all your stretching is helping!!

    • March 1, 2015 / 3:39 pm

Thanks Ali! I hope one more cold blast comes in for your race, too. I wouldn’t hate just one more taste of the cold before it’s gone for the year!

  7. March 1, 2015 / 2:39 pm

I hope your Garmin recovers! It’s such a bummer to have problems with an expensive and newish gadget (not to mention something us runners rely on). I saw the dress in both colors too and it seemed to depend on the lighting in the room. It was pretty weird though. I have been thinking of getting a resistance band to help with hip exercises and that stretch looks awesome and awkward. Were there different options that you had to choose from? I was looking online at some and I didn’t know which one to get…

    • March 1, 2015 / 3:42 pm

Ah, I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw the dress in both colors! For me it really depended on the angle I was looking at it. Head on and I saw it more white/gold but from a side angle I saw it totally black and blue!

There were a lot of different resistance band weights to choose from. I had no idea what to go with so I grabbed a 25lb one since it was on clearance (hah). I think 25lbs is a bit much and I probably should have went for something closer to 15lbs or even 10lbs resistance, but it’s still getting the job done!

  8. March 1, 2015 / 2:40 pm

The broken Garmin makes me sad. Hope support is able to offer you some good news soon. Nice job on all the stretching, glad your hip and IT are feeling better! Beautiful sunset pic.

    • March 1, 2015 / 3:43 pm

Thanks Jennifer! I keep checking the Garmin every couple of hours to see if anything changes. That quote about the “definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over expecting a different result” keeps coming to mind but… I have to keep trying!

  9. March 1, 2015 / 3:42 pm

Oh, I’m definitely going to try that stretch this week – my right hip has been sore since my long run the other day and I’ve never seen that stretch.
Bummer on the Garmin – you haven’t had it very long so they should replace it if it can’t be fixed!!

    • March 1, 2015 / 3:44 pm

Exactly! I just got it last August for my bday, so I know it must still be under warranty. I just hope the whole exchange process doesn’t take too long!

I hope you like the stretch. It’s a lot like couch stretch but I felt it a lot more in the IT band which was nice!

  10. March 1, 2015 / 7:16 pm

I’ve had weird issues like that with my Garmin before, too. Usually, I’ve either let it just run itself down and then recharged it, or tried holding all of the buttons for a long time. Somehow, it’s always come back to life! Good luck with yours 🙂

  11. March 2, 2015 / 6:26 am

Sounds like all that stretching paid off! Glad to hear your hip is better. I stretch a ton, and I do think it helps. The Garmin FR 220 I just got is so glitchy. I haven’t had your problem but have had others like it suddenly changing languages & instantly turning back on when I turn it off.
