Weekly RUNdown!

Happy Monday! I hope your week is already off to a productive start. If you’re reading this before 10AM the most productive thing I’ve probably done so far is make a cup of coffee … so I hope you’re ahead of me!

I was productive last night and edited a video where I talk about my training (and make my favorite smoothie)! You can watch the video below OR you can just read on because I wrote about many of the same things in this post!

1. My mom officially has a place to live down here and will start moving in just a couple of weeks! After only two days of looking she found a really nice condo to rent for the next year. It’s not exactly her dream retirement home, but by finding a new rental for a year she gives herself ample time to find that dream place! I’M SO EXCITED to finally have her down here!

My mom doesn’t know it yet, but pretty soon she’s going to start training for a 5K!

2. My marathon training is most definitely in full swing. My legs are already feeling the effects of cumulative fatigue… I like it but I am exhausted! Thank goodness for today being a complete rest day.

If anyone out there is thinking about incorporating back-to-backs into your marathon training routine I cannot stress how important it is to take your easy runs SUPER easy. Last week a couple of my easy runs were done at 14:45 pace… no joke! I know that easy running is the one thing that allowed me to make it through speedwork and another round of back to backs!

3. Here’s my weekly rundown from last week:

20150131_171417 (1)

Monday: REST
Tuesday:  2 miles + 4 x 800
Wednesday: 5 miles easy
Thursday: 6 mile tempo
Friday: Active recovery (walking)
Saturday: 6 miles easy
Sunday: 10 miles easy

4. I’m makin’ videos! I filmed two videos this weekend and simultaneously editing them and working on this blog post.

When I went to film the first video this weekend I realized I don’t have a tripod that fits my DSLR or my new little Samsung camera, so I had to create a makeshift little holder. Those nail polish bottles are literally holding the camera up!

You do whatcha gotta do!

I am a little worried that you are going to think these two initial videos are boring because they are on topics I’ve blogged about fairly recently – but I am trying to seed my YouTube channel with the basic things I think about most/love the most, so the first few videos might be similar to my written blogs.

Eventually my videos and blog posts will be different but complimentary (I hope)!

Alrighty! I hope you have a great Monday and if you watch the video (even just 30 seconds of it) let me know what you think in the comments below or on YouTube! THANK YOU 🙂

If you’re in marathon training, how are you feeling – a bit tired or still super excited about every run?

  1. Heather @ GirlGoesRunning

Taking your easy running seriously is super important. Great point!

I think making videos is cool! I hate the sound of my voice on camera so I will likely never do it, lol.

My legs are feeling drained some days so I definitely agree with you about marathon training being in full swing. 😉

I wish you would do videos, I bet they would be the best! Your blog posts are always so upbeat and funny. I know everyone would love your videos just as much as your posts!

  2. Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine

Great job with your training so far! And I love that you’re gonna get your mom to run a 5k:)

I like your video! I’ll have to try that awesome smoothie you made. Chicago training is getting very real and my legs feel super tired, but I am really excited about all of this increased mileage.

It’s a really tasty smoothie. Mango + pineapple is really the best combination, but peaches work in a pinch 🙂

  4. Hanna @ TheMillennialNextDoor

Ahhhh cumulative fatigue! I remember it well! The exhaustion is a great feeling because you know it is making you SO prepared for race day. Keep up the good work! That’s so exciting that your mom has a place to live – yay!

Good luck on your ongoing foray into video. It looks like a lot of hard work but I’m sure you’ll be great at it!! Get it girl!

Thank you! 🙂 I’m so so so glad my mom is going to be here sooner than expected – – when I spoke to her this afternoon it sounded like she was planning to be here *before* August 1st! YAY!

  5. Maddie @ Dixie Runs

Great runs this week!! Last week was my first week of training and I feel pretty good so far. I built a decent base so it wasn’t like I jumped into any unexpected and I think my recent strength training has helped my legs A LOT. I’m so glad your mom found a place nearby so you can have her there with you!! Enjoy your week 🙂

P.s. I’m at work so I can’t watch your videos right now but I will later tonight!!

I am sure all of the strength training has helped and will continue to help throughout training!!

Thanks for the support 🙂 I really appreciate it!

  6. Heather

I’m still feeling pretty excited about training, which is awesome since I still have 14 weeks to go. I actually thought that I was much closer to race day. It is kind of a relief to realize that I still have plenty of time.

I’m looking forward to more videos!

Awesome vlog, really great job. Agree 100% with your tripod, mine is usually small rocks I find out on the trails lol.

So glad your mom has a place, I’m sure that takes a lot of stress away. Not in official marathon training yet but my runs are great and my legs feel very strong.

You need to do a bit more talking in your videos – like SAGE!!!! 🙂 🙂

  8. Helly

    I love how you’ve planned your mom’s first 5k 😀
That’s so cool how your vlogging! My voice on camera sounds absolutely awful and I just couldn’t lol!! Your voice is very pleasant though and perfect for video 🙂 I’ll have to try your smoothie–it looked soooo yummy!

Awww thanks! I always think my voice sounds like a little girl’s voice. I purposefully try to sound more adult like when I film a video – and I wondered if that came off as weird! 🙂

My mom is going to love doing the 5K! She used to be a really avid power walker, but it’s been a while since she’s been in the routine. I know once she gets back into the swing of things she’ll be up to a 5K in no time!

  9. Jennifer @ Running on Lentils

YES to running easy runs at a truly easy pace! I started that during my last training after reading the Hanson’s method book, and it really does help. I’m doing Hanson’s this training and know to pace my easy runs easy. Great training week!

  10. Kristen @ Glitter and Dust

That’s great that your mom found a place and will now live close to you. I love that my mom lives only a couple miles away – we have a close relationship and always make time for each other. That would be awesome if you were able to train for a 5K together. My mom can’t run, unfortunately, but she rides her road bike religiously and we go on lots of rides together (when I’m not pregnant). ☺

Have a great week of training!!!

  11. Megan @ Meg Go Run

I don’t mean to sound creepy but I could listen to you talk all day long…. !!! I liked your downward guilty side glance when you said you didn’t get up before the sunrise to get your run in. 🙂 Smoothies are so good, I just don’t feel like making them! How lazy is that? What does Adam think of your Vlogs? Paul makes fun of me when I do videos. 🙂 That is awesome that your mom found a place!

Hahah I didn’t even notice the guilty downward glance, but I did feel guilty about it! I haven’t gotten up for an early morning run in what feels like forever!

  12. cheryl

Can’t watch the vlog now, but I will later! I am starting to feel the effects of cumulative fatigue–my day off is Wednesday!
It will be fun for your mom to be close, and fun to train for a 5k!

[…] I just want to say thank you so much for the kind words about the video I shared yesterday. I think sharing video is so much more personal because I can’t select my best angles (LOL) […]

  16. Karen

I am glad your mom found a spot!
I love the video chat 🙂 I almost always wear a visor too, but if not always a headband. It really does keep the sweat from just pouring into your eyes.
I like that you don’t look too far ahead at your plan lol It doesn’t seem quite as daunting this round though, does it?
