Weekly Training Recap: Ouch, My Shin!

Hi there! I’m coming at ya today with my weekly training recap. Just like last week I’m following the format that Jen from Dashing in Style uses.

Week at a Glance

Training for: Nothing specific. I have a couple of races coming up that I want to feel strong and healthy for, but I am not planning for either to be PR races. I just want to enjoy myself and build a solid base for spring.

Days running: 5

Miles this week: 18.5 (another low-for-me mileage week)


Easy Run: 3 miles


This day was my first day of work in 2017! I came home still feeling a little bit sick from my sinus infection, but overall feeling a lot better than I had the previous week. The fresh air definitely helped energize me after a long day in the office!


Easy Run: 4 miles


Started this run in the daylight and ended it in the dark. Isn’t it funny how fast the sun sets? It sets at a much faster pace than I run :). Day two back in the office and I was feeling drained, but getting out there for a few miles felt nice to help me de-stress!


Easy run: 4 miles


This day was hell. During my drive home from work my stomach was in knots and when I got home I had… bad times. I went out for a run and I’m glad I did, but when I got home I had more bad times. Oy. I don’t know what I ate but it was really bad!


Bridge Repeats: 3.5 miles (1 mi w/up, 6 repeats, 1 mi c/down)


This was the day that I finally felt like my sinus infection was gone and I was excited to get in some harder miles. I decided on six bridge repeats, which are my favorite type of running workout. I feel like you get speed and strength in during the same session – more bang for your buck!

I think it was this day that I bruised my shin though. I came barreling down the bridge on the first repeat and my left foot slipped on some sand. I think my right foot must have come down really hard to brace myself so I wouldn’t fall and that did a little damage. I’m sure it’ll be fine!


I didn’t run this day. The streak came to a premature end.


Easy run: 3 miles + 1 fast mile


The weather was COLD this day! Like mid-60s cold! Even though I knew my shin was feeling sensitive I couldn’t help myself. I had to go out running and take advantage of the weather.

Unfortunately my phone died about .5 mile into this run. Lately my phone has been randomly dying a lot even though the battery life looks fine. I recently read that it’s a known problem with iPhone 6S/6S+ devices so I’m going to see about getting a free battery replacement.

I picked up the pace for the last mile here because I was freezing and also I was bored due to my phone having died early on.


Strength Training + Core


My shin was really bothering me this day. It hurt even when I was just sitting on the couch. Given that my run streak had officially ended up Friday due to the shooting in Fort Lauderdale, I decided to treat my leg right and take a rest day.

I’ve rescheduled my long run for TODAY! 🙂

Now that I get home from work early I can get in higher mileage on week days which is nice. It gives me the freedom to push a long(er) run to a week night when need be. That never could have happened before! I’m loving it!

    I think I would like to be able to have more time in the mornings but still get home early. Maybe like 10-3? I think that would be enough time to get some work done;) Besides, how great would a 5 hour work day be! Its nice that you will have more time in the evening to run longer now. I wouldn’t have the motivation to do that after work! Sorry your shin is still giving you trouble!

    Thanks for the link about the battery. I am going to see if I qualify, mine has done that a few times. I think bridge repeats sound like a great work out. I don’t have any bridges to run here but I did get to run one the marathon/half course here. I love the view!
    My dream work out hours? 0 lol I am over working…I’m old.

    My current hours are 7-3:30 but with my commute, it’s more like 6-5. It’s brutal on some days. My ideal work hours would be 8-4 with no commute and lots of flexibility!

    I have actually been thinking about work hours a lot lately. I really want to get in a position where I am working my own hours. I work either 8:00 – 4:30 or 8:30 – 5pm right now, but I really dislike working past 3pm when my kids are home. So I guess 8 – 3 would be my ideal hours… which of course is only during school hours… during the summer I want to be home with them much more!!

    Solid week! Even though you had to end the streak early, it seemed like you got a lot out of it. I hope your shin recovers soon!

    My battery has been dying quickly since the new iOS update. Also I have like…NO memory on my phone anymore. It’s crazy. I hate how Apple seems to time it so you need a new phone at the most inopportune times.

    I’m sorry your shin is still bothering you! I hope it survived your longer run today. 🙂 Maybe it’s good your streak is over! That’s why streaks make me nervous… no breaks. My dream work hours would be from Noon-2pm every day. HAHAHAHAHA!

    How is your shin feeling after your longer run today? I hope better and that it was “nothing”. I have flex hours at work and although our CEO wants us to come into the office most days, it’s up to us to manage our time. Most days I start working when I wake up and am getting ready for my workout. Then after that I work more (either from home or at the office) and basically work til about 5 PM or so (later if I need to but it’s from the comfort of my couch). Ideal work hours: um, not working!! LOL. When I had all that time off over the holidays I realized I can really fill up my day with way better things than work!
