Yesterday Margaret, fellow runner and cat mom, put up a Q&A post titled, “What My Husband Thinks of My Running” and I enjoyed the heck out of it.
Basically, Margaret asked her husband several questions about her training to see things from his perspective. I decided to do the same Q&A with Adam, although I changed a couple of the questions so they would be more relevant to my life and training. My comments are in italics. I hope you enjoy!
1. Does my running make you want to run?
No, I don’t like running at all. Running is something I should do but I avoid it because I don’t enjoy it.
A couple of years ago Adam did Tough Mudder Miami and finished in 2:48 I think (the course was 11 miles long and included many obstacles). He retired from running after that saying he hated it too much to ever race again. He will do the occasional 5K with me and can knock out 8 minute pace without training. I’m not jealous or anything. His cardio game is strong because he does MMA.
2. What do I eat before I run?
I know you like those Stinger gummies. Sometimes you bring a powder drink and you usually take gels to eat while you’re on your run.
As far as pre-race meals, I know one time you had pasta and that didn’t work out too well so you never did that again.
Yes! I really like Honey Stinger chomps in cherry and orange blossom. The powder drink Adam’s talking about is Ultima, my favorite electrolyte replenisher drink. I rarely ever bring gels. I have a stack of them because my coach wants me to use gels, but I hate them so much.
3. How far do I run most days?
It depends on what you’re training for. Sometimes you’ll have a change of pace run where you do like two miles, but if you’re training for a marathon you might run 18 miles. Anywhere between 2 and 18, I guess.
I don’t think I’ve ever done a fartlek that was only 2 miles long, and my longest training run for a full marathon is 20 miles. No points for this question!
4. What kind of running shoes do I wear?
You wear Brooks. You get a new pair every year. You wore the Brooks 14 last year, the Brooks 15 this year and next year you’ll probably wear the Brooks 16. They’re normal looking running shoes. Sometimes they’re purple and sometimes they’re yellow.
This answer is too good, haha. I wear the Brooks Adrenalines GTS and go through 3 to 4 pairs per year. The Adrenalines do end with the year number, so points for that, but no points for the shoe colors as I’ve never had a purple or yellow pair.
5. What is my favorite race?
White? Asian? Black? Feline!
I know you like watching the Boston Marathon.
When it comes to participation, I don’t think you liked the Portland Marathon, but I think you really liked the Miami half marathon. We had a nice hotel room.
This is really close! I love watching Boston and the Miami half is my current favorite race since I PR’d at it. My ultimate favorite race course is the Fort Lauderdale half though since it goes along my normal training route and I’m super familiar with every step of it. I definitely don’t hate the Portland Marathon. It wasn’t my favorite race, but I want to go back and have a redemption run there sometime soon-ish.
6. Do you like going to my races?
If they’re local, not really, but I like traveling for races. When you race in Fort Lauderdale I rarely make it to the finish line. Actually, I rarely wake up before you get home. I just wait for you to get home to ask you how it went (once I wake up).
I think this means I can schedule more destination races for next year!
7. What have you learned from having a wife who runs?
Oh my God, I’ve learned so much. I’ve learned about shoes and I’ve learned about Scott Jurek. I’ve also learned about fartleks and Anton.
I’m so happy that Adam mentioned Scott and Anton (Krupicka), two of my favorite ultrarunners.
8. Does Mindy Kaling run?
She slow jogs.
This is the perfect answer because Mindy’s famous for saying she likes to slow jog, which makes me think we would be the best running buddies.
9. If I could run with anyone living or dead, who would it be?
Mulan? Justin Timberlake? Britney Spears?
Oh, I know, LeBron James. You would run a 5K with him so that you could finally know what his 5K time is!
Hahaha. Adam says Mulan because I sometimes listen to “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” during speedwork. Hey, it’s a motivational song!
LeBron is a really good answer. I am obsessed with looking up celebrity race times, and I am dying to know how fast LeBron could run a 5K. He’s such a super-athlete that I bet he could crush a 5K in sub-20 despite his big frame. I’d love to see it happen!
That’s a wrap for this Q&A. Thanks so much to Adam for answering and thanks to you for reading. I’ll talk to you again soon!
Would you like to see more Q&As with Adam?
If you’re a run blogger, will you PLEASE do this with your significant other?
