Hi! How ya doing? I hope you’re doing well!
I’m always curious about what sort of gadgets, accessories and fuel other runners use on a daily basis. A couple of weekends ago I filmed a “What’s in My (Running) Gym Bag” video to chat with you about the stuff I use all the time.
I’ll be back tomorrow with my weekly Chicago training recap :).
Here’s a cute pic of Cecil, just because:
Cutest smile I’ve ever seen!
What are your gym bag necessities?
What are the 3 running things you can’t live without?
Do you apply sunscreen before you go running?
-What brand do you use? I’m on the hunt for one that really doesn’t burn the eyes!
My 3 must-haves are a lock, earphones and a water bottle. Always keep those 3 in my bag at all times. I love your makeup in your video!

Thanks Sam! As I was watching the video back I realized that my makeup is partially sweated off, haha! I’m still using the Maybelline Infallible foundation (when it runs out I’ll switch to a cruelty free brand), and it holds up well against sweat but not 100% apparently!
I always have earphones with me too! I keep them in my purse instead of my gym bag though since I like to use them during my lunch breaks too!
I would go through that tiny bottle of sunscreen in about a week, haha. Though it seems no matter how liberally I apply sunscreen I am doomed to have super weird tan lines at all times.
Author
Hahah yeah I have runner tan lines (shorts, tops, SOCKS) too! That little bottle will probably be gone in no time, although I don’t use a lot since I run in the evening and I’m not too worried about getting burned. I seem to go through spray bottles in like 2 days though. I feel like they’re mostly filled with air!!! haha
The only things I really need to go run are clothes, running socks, shoes, and my Garmin. If it’s late I do have a clip on light that I like to use, and if it’s really dark I have the light up vest. I also have been using 2Toms this summer, which is similar to Body Glide. The people on Ten Junk Miles (if you haven’t listened to this podcast, I think you’d like it because they talk all about ultrarunning) recommended it and say it lasts 24 hours! I am bad about using sunscreen–I sometimes remember to put it on before long runs, but I never do for short runs. I know I should make it a habit!
Author
WOW, thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely check out 2Toms!
I watched a really cool documentary about the Tarawera ultra over the weekend, I need to include it in a post soon – the entire thing is on YouTube and it was SO good!
3 things – my Garmin, wireless headphones – phone ( has the music)
but body glide too! and Nuun…ha, ha, my list is growing
I only put sunscreen on my cheeks, anyplace and my eyes will burn. I use Clinque or Clarins and i believe they were on your bad list…
I use a spray coppertone on shoulders and it seems to work pretty good.

Why am I being so resistant to wireless headphones? I love my wires! haha
That’s a great idea to only put the sunscreen on cheeks, I will have to give that a try. Although I think I must wipe my fast with my hands a lot because I seem to wipe sunscreen right into my eyes! I know I shouldn’t be touching my face at all – but I can’t help it! I hate that feeling of sweat running down!
Cecil looks like her is pondering the mysteries of life. Or perhaps just thinking about treats!!!
I think I remember when you got that gym bag. Did you blog about it and use gift cards??? 🙂
I don’t keep a running gym bag cause I normally just run from home, but besides my shoes, socks, shorts, bra, tank, and visor, I NEED sunglasses, mp3 player, and Garmin!
Author
Hahahah I am sure he is thinking about treats!!! I don’t think he ever thinks about anything else. I call them his appetizer since I always give him his dental treats before his dinner 🙂
I did get the bag with some gift cards! Thank goodness for those because gym bags are literally too expensive for what they are!
Ha this was awesome, i totally need to do this. My bag has all kinda of awesome stuff.
My 3 running needs are shoes, garming, and hydration pack. To dang hot to be running without water lol

YES PLS I would love to see/hear what’s in your gym bag!!! Tell us all the awesome things in there!
I used to never run with headphones, but I got these http://www.66audio.com/bts-bluetooth-sports-headphones and now believe every run has to have them! Aside from those, I carry my rehydrate from Advocare to get all the electrolytes after my run and makeup wipes too!
I run straight after work and those save my face from breaking out.

Thanks for the link to those bluetooth headphones! I have been so resistant to giving up my wired earbuds and I have no idea why! Adam recently switched to bluetooth and he loves them – but I am being a grandma about it! 😀
we have so many of the same things in our bags! i love say yes to cucumbers wipes. i also have a thing of dry shampoo in my bag just in case i’m going somewhere right after my workout.
Author
Ohhhhh what a good idea to keep dry shampoo in your bag! I’m going to pick up a little travel sized one to keep in there now too. I almost always go straight home but it never hurts to be prepared!
That LifeSavers idea is wonderful! A real lifesaver, haha. Ok, enough corny jokes… I think the one thing that I have in my gym bag that others don’t is a list of PT exercises I need to do, along with the pages of my Hansons book photocopied so I remember what those stretches and warm ups are. My mind needs lots of help in the early AM so it’s a great reminder for me.

Hahahha yes! A real life saver!
I hear ya, if I was running in the a/m I would need to keep photocopies with me too. As it is I have to check my training spreadsheet 10X a day just to remember what distance I’m supposed to run every day (even though it’s almost always the same distance)!
I love you gym bag!
I have a zumba gym bag and a running bookpack… because I’m weird. Other than the basics, I always carry extra socks, and moist wipes to clean off salt and dirt from my face after long runs.
I like the idea of sucking on candy while on runs! I’m going to give that a try!
